one live, do something

There was this interactive experiential exhibit on HIV and AIDS a few days back at Gurney Plaza. It's called One Life Revolution (OLR) where visitors can walk into the lives of the people infected with HIV or AIDS and digitally experience their lives.

I was curious by the setup they built as it were all covered up by brownish 'walls', which looked like those brown carts. Only thing that can be seen from these walls are words which gets you even more curious -.-, such as One Live, Do Something, Experience blah blah blah... sorry can't remember *shy* I walked up to the 'main' section of the exhibition, and saw people were queuing to get inside the 'carts'.

As my brother and I stood there, one guy suddenly spoke to us and briefly explain what the exhibition is all about *I think*. I said I think because the guy spoke to us in Mandarine and being the banana I am I can hardly understand a word he said. I wanted to tell him I can't understand Mandarine, but it's kinda rude to interupt someone when they are talking and he actually talked very fast and non-stop, swt. At the end of the converstion, the only sentence I can understand is "Ni men you si jian Ke yi khan khan yi xia". Alright, so I get myself in line to get in and khan khan. I asked my bro and my cousin to join in as well. They got nothing better to do anyway, blek.

When it was my turn to enter, a girl put a mp3 player around my neck and passed a headset to me. Asked if I would like to listen to English or Chinese, English of course. She briefly explained that I just need to walk and listen to the narrator in the mp3 player. Then she asked me to sit at the waiting room till the narrator tells me to go in past the curtain. As I sat there, I tried to adjust the headset as it kept falling from my head and tried to listen to the narrator at the same time.

Honestly I didn't really heard much of what the narrator said in the first part. So when she asked me to go to the next room I was blur and confuse. I was in a very tiny little room with 3 other doors. And on each door, it was written the name of a person on it. 'Sher Mom', 'John', 'Jothi'. Swt, which should I enter? It didn't took me long to realize I was just supposed to walk into one of the life of the 3 people. But who? zzz... Think I stood there for like 1 minute, till the narrator mentioned the name 'Sher Mom' again -.-

So I walked in, holding the headset to my head as it still kept falling. The narrator told the story of Sher Mom, accompanied by background music and some sound effects. The rooms I entered were decorated accordingly to the parts of the story. The rooms manifest the story told. The story, the backgroud music, the sound effects, the rooms, all combine is more then enough to allow a person to visualize what excatly happened during that certain point of time. You can actually experience the pain, the sorrow and the hardships they had to go through. I saw one girl actually cried. It really touches your heart, make you think how lucky you are, how lucky I am.

my hand was chopped '+' at the 'clinic'

My story has a good ending, which I am actually relieve for the girl, Sher Mom. There was a room full of all the photos of the children around the world who are infected by HIV and AIDS. Then there was also a room called the Wall of Hopes. Visitors can write things they wish to say from their hearts and pin it to the notice board. Lots of hopeful, meaningful and inspiring words are written and pinned. I did my part, and leave the room. Each of us are given a simple bracelet and a red ribbon upon leaving the room.

All in all, it's a worthwhile experience. I wanted to go in again for the other 2 stories, but didn't have the time. I bought the car decal and the T-shirt and the money goes to chariy.

t-shirt, bracelet, car decal & booklet

I would like to go again if they come back to Penang. For those who missed the exhibition and happens to be in other state, they are now at Kuantan, East Coast Mall from 16th - 19th Oct, 10am - 10pm.

I almost forgot, the exhibition is brought by World Vision Malaysia. You can visit their website at www.worldvision.com.my
